PS4 CONTROLLER TEST (DUALSHOCK 4)
How to connect the DualShock 4 to a PC
Use a micro-USB cable that carries data: many phone charging cables only charge and the PC won’t see the controller. To connect it wirelessly, put your PC in Bluetooth pairing mode and hold the PS button and the Share button together for about 3 seconds, until the light bar flashes quickly in white; then pick “Wireless Controller” in the list. Open this page and press any button so the tester shows it.
Testing it on Android or iPhone
On Android 10 or later, the DualShock 4 pairs via Bluetooth with PS + Share; you can also use a micro-USB OTG adapter. On iPhone and iPad with iOS 13 or later, pair it in Settings › Bluetooth and open the tester in Safari. If the controller was paired with the console, pressing PS may reconnect it there: turn the PS4 off or unplug it while you test.
Common PS4 controller faults
Stick drift is the most frequent DualShock 4 fault: with the stick released the value doesn’t return to 0, and in games the camera or character moves on its own. Also common are broken L2 and R2 springs (the trigger feels loose or doesn’t reach 100%), a loose micro-USB port that stops charging, a battery that drains fast or swells, and L1/R1 buttons that stop clicking. In the tester each of these is visible at a glance.
If your DualShock 4 fails, we repair it
In Argentina we repair PS4 controllers at our workshop in Flores, Buenos Aires: stick replacement for drift, springs and triggers, buttons, the micro-USB charging port and the battery. We check it with this same tester before and after the repair. See our PS4 and PS5 controller repair.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with every DualShock 4?
Yes: the original model (CUH-ZCT1) and the second generation (CUH-ZCT2), with a light bar on the touchpad, are tested the same way, as are many compatible controllers.
Why doesn’t my PC detect the PS4 controller?
It is almost always the cable: try a micro-USB cable that carries data. If you use Bluetooth, pair it again with PS + Share until the light flashes white.
How much drift is normal on a DualShock 4?
With the stick released, less than 0.05 on each axis. If it reads 0.10 or more, or the value moves on its own, the stick has drift.
The L2 or R2 trigger feels loose, what is it?
Usually the trigger spring is broken. In the tester you’ll see it doesn’t return to 0% or doesn’t reach 100%. The spring or the trigger is replaced.
