XBOX CONTROLLER TEST (ONE - SERIES)

How to connect the Xbox controller to a PC

A cable is the most direct way: the Xbox Series controller uses USB-C and the Xbox One controller micro-USB; Windows recognizes it with no drivers. For Bluetooth, turn the controller on with the Xbox button and hold the pair button (the small one on top, next to the port) for about 3 seconds, until the logo blinks quickly; then pick “Xbox Wireless Controller” on the PC. The first Xbox One controllers have no Bluetooth: they need a cable or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Testing it on Android or iPhone

Controllers with Bluetooth (Xbox Series, and Xbox One from model 1708) pair with Android in Settings › Bluetooth the same way and are tested in Chrome. iPhone and iPad with iOS 14.5 or later support them too: pair them and open the tester in Safari. If the controller was connected to the console, turn the console off while you test so it doesn’t reconnect.

Common Xbox controller faults

As with PlayStation, the most common fault is stick drift: the stick doesn’t return to the center and the tester shows a value other than 0 with the stick released. You may also see LB and RB bumpers that don’t click or fail on one side, LT/RT triggers that don’t reach 100%, a D-pad that registers two directions at once, and dropouts caused by worn or corroded AA battery contacts. Vibration is tested with the controller’s large motors.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with the Elite controller?

Yes. Xbox Elite Series 1 and 2 controllers are tested the same way; the back paddles show up when the browser reports them as buttons.

Why doesn’t my PC detect the Xbox controller?

Try another cable that carries data or pair it again with the pair button. If it is an Xbox One controller without Bluetooth, use a cable or the wireless adapter.

How much drift is normal on an Xbox controller?

With the stick released, less than 0.05 on each axis. If it reads 0.10 or more, or the value moves on its own, there is drift.

The controller disconnects by itself, what could it be?

Often it is the batteries or corroded battery contacts. If it still happens with new batteries, it may be the controller’s board or antenna.
